Foods that have few calories and are high in water content and fiber, are considered to have negative calories. Just the act of eating and digestion burns the calories that these foods contain. All of these foods are from the fruits and vegetable categories and an excellent choice for including in juicing and low calorie and restricted calorie diets.
Many weight loss plans do not include the amount of calories that digestion uses. Most people burn around 200 calories a day from digestion alone. Generally high fat foods use less calories to digest and fruits and vegetables rich in fiber use more.
Vegetables are an obvious choice. Some of them may already be part of your diet and should be very familiar to everyone. One in particular that has been part of many diets is celery. It contains only 16 calories per 100g and is chocked full of nutrients, fiber, and water.
Cucumbers without the peel have 12 calories per 100g, and with the peel 15 calories. Caloric content of vegetables can vary depending on if the peels are included and the colour.
Tomatoes are another popular vegetable with negative calories. All colours are very low; yellow with 15 calories, orange with 16 calories, red with 18 calories, and green with 23.
Other salad ingredients are also negative in calories. All the greens in the lettuce family are extremely low in calories like watercress, kale, green leaf, red leaf, iceberg, spinach and endive. All have less than 23 calories. Radishes can add flavor to a salad and have only 16 calories per 100g.

Other citrus fruits also have negative calories. The once popular crash diet food grapefruit, has only 30 calories, as well as limes. Oranges, though a bit higher at 47 calories, still can be considered to have negative calories.
Melons are another tasty low calorie food. Casaba melons have only 28 calories, and watermelon, the popular summertime treat, only has 30 calories. Another popular favorite is Cantaloupe with only 36 calories.
One fruit that some people consider not a fruit is the strawberry. It has only 32 calories. Other berries like raspberry, blackberries, blueberries and cranberries also are low cal.
Of course a diet containing only negative calorie foods would be deficient in some nutrients but they can be used to reduce the calorie density and increase the nutritional density of higher calorie dishes.
One way to reduce calories in dishes is to substitute these foods instead of using higher calorie ingredients. Cauliflower has only 25 calories per 100g and is a great substitute for mashed potatoes in many recipes.
Negative calorie foods can be eaten between meals as a low calorie snack. Juicing is very popular and many of these foods are an obvious choice to include in juice recipes. Negative calorie foods should be considered for everyone trying to reduce their daily calorie intake.
